Music can be a tool of transformation. Vibrational medicine.
It can radically alter our mood and environment in powerful ways.
As can moving the body in creative and expressive ways, breaking our usual habits.
I play resonant acoustic instruments: didgeridoo, guitar, piano, Tibetan singing bowls, drums etc. and electronic instruments and I love working with this combination of ancient and modern technology together.
I regularly hold Ecstatic Dance, Trance Dance and Somatic Flow classes.
Ecstatic Dance is a worldwide phenomenon! It is a free-form movement space supported by DJ’d and/or live music, where you can be yourself and dance your truth without the mask of personality or agenda. There are not fancy moves to learn, you can leave your worries at the door and simply let the rhythm take you. As the name suggests, it is uplifting and more “up tempo” than Somatic Flow. It is like a rave but without drink or drugs, getting high on our own natural energy, getting “into it” instead of “out of it!” The uplifting music selections and timeline of the journey follows a bell curve or wave, starting out calm, increasing in intensity until it comes to a peak, then returning to calmness at the end.
The only rules are:
1) No talking on the dance floor
2) No alcohol or drugs
3) Respect others
is a powerful practice that has ancient shamanic roots. Human beings have been dancing themselves into an altered state of consciousness for thousands of years all over the world, for healing and to receive visions and guidance that can bring transformation in their lives.
Using tools of specific breathing techniques, intentional movement to release old energy and call in new, isolating the senses (dancing with eyes closed or employing the use of a blindfold) and supported by deep, hypnotic music and healing sounds: drums, didgeridoo, rattles and shakers -among the most ancient of instruments -allows us to go into a trance state, wherein we can dance and experience reality in new ways.
Present-day Trance Dance combines the richness of these ancient rituals with modern technologies and knowledge, uniting the ancient and the new in a unique alchemy that can bring benefit of all beings in unprecedented ways.
is a new form I created and am developing from many years of meditation practice and my work as a craniosacral therapist / energy healer / bodyworker, incorporating contemporary discoveries and revelations from neuroscience and tantra (particularly the work of Peter Levine. It is a very deep, slow intuitive movement meditation journey, facilitated by ambient healing music, designed to restore the nervous system and facilitate a state of deep rest and wellbeing, which can be beneficial to people working through trauma.
(Disclaimer: Somatic Flow is and can in no way be a substitute for professional therapy, if you think or know you have trauma, PTSD or severe psychological illness it is advised you seek the guidance and help of a qualified therapist.)
I also have a dance meditation project with live ambient-fusion-world music in collaboration with friend and talented percussionist and healer, Rowan Sterk, called Dream Element. It incorporates aspects of Trance Dance and Somatic Flow but it is more open and the journey is supported and held by the music. The dancers are invited to move in whatever way authentic for them. Each dance meditation journey is unique and different, and each one finishes with a sound healing, with didgeridoo, gong, singing bowls and chimes.
I also lead chanting circles (in Sanskrit and English) and meditation, rooted in the Buddhist tradition of Shamatha-Vipashyana (tranquility and insight).
All of these different methods can all help us to shift our energy so that we feel more embodied and in our hearts and can create a field of unity in the group wherein we feel connected to each other, our purpose and our innate wellbeing. Which is a good thing is it not!
